2018 Investigation of the Influence of Engine Oil Types on the Piston-Cylinder Wear

Automobile engines are expected to present a long service life. Wear of the engine parts can be reduced, and fuel economy can be enhanced if the automobile engine can be functioned more effective. There are various factors such as appropriate cycle range, engine oil selection, regular maintenance of the vehicle, etc. that may influence the engine life. The engine oil type plays an essential role on limiting the wear amount. Hence, suitable engine oil should be selected to extend the service life of the engine. Moreover, engine oils enable better fuel-air combustion by partially preventing the wear of the moving parts [1,2]. In the literature, there are studies performed about the engine oil types which provide less wear in the piston-cylinder and improve the working performance. Engine of a Fiat branded Palio model automobile was employed as the test engine in this research. Wear of the piston-cylinder was investigated by carrying out experiments with two different engine oils which are Mobil SuperTM 2000 X1 10W-40 and Mobil SuperTM 3000 X1 5W-40. The test engine was operated for 144 h at 3000, 4000 and 5000 cycles for both of the engine oil types. The wear amount of the inner surface of the cylinder was determined by utilizing a comparator set and micrometer. Measurement results displayed that SuperTM 3000 X1 5W-40 type engine oil ensured superior conditions for the test engine yielding to less wear in the cylinders compared to the Mobil SuperTM 2000 X1 10W-40 type engine oil [3].
